Biographical history
1 Canadian Infantry Brigade was formed on 15 October 1953 in Germany, and took over the command Headquarters and staff of the 27 Canadian Infantry Brigade which had been removed from the order of battle. On 28 June 1968 the land combat and combat support units of Mobile Command were reorganized into self-contained combat group formations comprising infantry, armour, artillery and supporting services. These groupings of units allowed command to be exercised in Canada, when units were not otherwise tasked or assigned. In combat the groups and their service support formed the basic units which could be assigned different tasks. 1 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group was redesignated as 1 Combat Group, integrated with Canadian Forces Base Calgary from the already established units, and placed under one commander responsible for both. 1 Combat Group headquarters was tasked with assisting in the training of units and the administration of support to units assigned to both the combat group and CFB Calgary. On 16 March 1973 the headquarters unit of 1 Combat Group was renamed 1 Combat Group Headquarters and Signal Squadron. The Combat Group was redesignated on 10 June 1977 as 1 Canadian Brigade Group. In September 1991, 1 Canadian Brigade Group and CFB Calgary became independent of each other, report under separate commands, 1 CBG reporting to Land Force Western Area. On 30 July 1993 its name was changed to 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group.
