Biographical history
The 1st Canadian Army was the most senior Canadian formation during the Second World War and was formed in early 1942. On 6 April 1942, the 1st Canadian Army Headquarters was created to administer the growing number of Canadian troops in Britain. General Andrew Mcnaughton was placed in charge. 1st Canadian Army Headquarters did not arrive in Normandy until mid-July 1944. As a result it became only operational as of 23 July 1944. The 1st canadian Army participated in the Battle of Normandy, the Battle of the Scheldt, and for the last weeks of the war was tasked with clearing the Netherlands of German forces.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of 1st Canadian Army intelligence summaries from the Second World War, dated 1944-1945. Includes descriptions of enemy dispositions, weapons and Allied operational progress in Northwest Europe. A number of sketch drawings of German tanks, grenades and other weaponry are present. Also includes major tracer maps with detail various Allied and enemy positions in Northwest Europe. A variety of black and white copies of photographs of weapons, vehicles, maps and the European landscape and military installations are includes.
