In a 1927 letter, YMCA President Gerald W. Birks explains the Montreal YMCA's major 1925 Montreal population study: The Study consisted of a comprehensive survey of Greater Montreal, conducted under the direction of R. E. G. Davis. It clarified the need for a fund-raising campaign that took place in 1928 and funded renovation of the Downtown Branch building on Drummond Street, enlargement of facilities for Sir George Williams College, erection of the Stanley Street YMCA building, and new YMCA buildings in Verdun and NDG.

1946 Hugg Study

In 1944 the National Council of YMCAs of Canada conducted a study of YMCAs across the country. The report was entitled The Years Ahead: A Plan for the YMCA in the Next Decade. Five branches of the Montreal YMCA participated in gathering data and Montreal staff contributed the sections related to Membership and National Organization. Alan E. Hugg coordinated assembly of the Montreal input. Hugg adapted the Montreal input to produce a survey for the Montreal YMCA. Published in 1946, the Hugg Study consists of statistics on Greater Montreal and the Montreal YMCA and comparisons with Canadian YMCAs. It served as a starting point for the work of a number of committees covering all aspects of Y operations.

1949-1952 Branch Study

In 1949 a new Metropolitan Policy and Survey Committee began to study the Montreal YMCA's branches, college, and schools in relation to the needs of their communities; to recommend new areas which required YMCA services; to study present buildings and recommend structural changes; to consider what new buildings might be required, and to prepare estimates of the capital and maintenance costs of executing the recommendations. Information was gathered on population trends, leisure time facilities, youth programs, and other topics for the Island of Montreal and the South Shore. A final report was presented in mid-1952.

1964-1969 Planning and Development

A new Planning and Development Committee involved the Montreal Association in a planning effort that began in March 1965. In August 1966 Guidelines for the Continuing Development of the YMCA of Greater Montreal presented the information that had been gathered, and defined the problems and issues. A City-Wide YMCA Seminar took place in September 1966 and a second was held in November 1967. Branch inputs were completed toward the end of 1967. In January 1968 the Metropolitan Board of Directors approved a report containing the findings and conclusions of the Committee. In March 1968 the Planning and Development Committee terminated; it was reconstituted as a permanent committee of the Board of Directors, called the City-Wide Planning and Development Committee.
