Biographical history
Over the years Girl Guides Canada has affiliated itself with several organizations. In Nova Scotia, some of these organizations have sponsored Companies and Packs.
Salvation Army: On April 16, 1937, a Memorandum of Agreement was made between the Salvation Army and the Canadain Council of the Girl Guides Association. The Salvation Army had a similar programme to Girl Guides since 1915, which was discontinued when the two organizations began working together. Many companies and packs were formed through this relationship. Sadly, in 1998 the Salvation Army disaffiliated from Girl Guides of Canada.
I.O.D.E: The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire began sponsoring Brownie Packs and Guide Companies in 1933. Various I.O.D.E. chapters would register new groups to be affilated with I.O.D.E., including a guide company in the Halifax School for the Blind. The affiliation dissolved in 1946.
Nova Scotia Council of Women: Founded in 1894 as the Local Council of Women in Halifax, the Nova Scotia Council strives to make improvements to their local community. An affiliation with Girl Guides of Canada was a natural fit, as their mission statement is “to empower all women to work together towards improving the quality of life for women, families and society through a forum of member organizations and individuals”.
Catholic Women's League of Nova Scotia: The League has sponsored the Girl Guide movement since 1922. They have provided financial assistance and volunteers to serve as Guiders.
