Biographical history
Albert Charles Barnes was born on February 12, 1916 in Edmonton, Alberta. He attended the Gregg College in Chicago, Illinois from 1936 to 1937, and won the Gregg Diamond Medal in the world-wide Gregg competition for speed and accuracy in shorthand in 1937. He was a stenographer for many years, reporting the proceedings of various conventions and all sessions of the Alberta Legislature for three years. From 1940 to 1944, Barnes was on the members' stenographers staff of the House of Commons in Ottawa. Between 1944 and 1946, he was acting Sheriff of the Yukon Territory, and Official Court Reporter and Registrar of the Yukon Territorial Court, living in Dawson City. When the person he was replacing officially retired in 1946, Barnes took over the part time positions. In August 1948, he was accepted into the Territorial Court as an articled law clerk. During his time in the Yukon, Barnes also worked for the Department of Mines and Resources. By 1951, he had moved to Vancouver where he became the Court Reporter for the Offices of Vancouver. He was also a member of the National Shorthand Reporters Association and Ottawa Civil Service Association.
Custodial history
The fonds was donated to the Legal Archives of British Columbia by Mrs. F. B. Flach, sister of A. C. Barnes. The Legal Archives of British Columbia offered the Yukon-related portion of the fonds to the Yukon Archives.
Scope and content
The fonds primarily consists of black and white photographs taken by Barnes, of scenes along the Alaska Highway, and in Dawson City and Whitehorse during the 1940s. One series of photographs includes captions by Barnes; another series consists of small snapshot albums containing photographs taken along the Alaska Highway between northern British Columbia and the Alaska border, with several of the Teslin area. Other images include buildings, planes, vehicles, sternwheelers, First Nations cemetery and crafts, a giant mosquito and various individuals. There are also photographs of events at Dawson City: parades; a gathering of the Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP) in Dawson City; a Governor-General's visit to Dawson City; Charles Barnes and his home and offices in Dawson City. There are also 30 postcards included in the fonds, one addressed to Barnes' mother. The fonds is arranged in four series : Postcards; Captioned photographs; Photographs from Snapshot Booklets; Assorted photographs. Included with the fonds is an identification key for 28 of the photographs.
