The Woman's Christian Temperance Union (often mistakenly called the Women's Christian Temperance Union) was first organized in Canada at Owen Sound, Ontario in 1874. Its primary purpose was to obtain prohibition, but it has worked in close and effective cooperation with other social service groups. In 1886 Mrs. Letitia Youmans visited western Canada and organized Unions at Morley, Calgary and Regina. By 1893 there was also a an Edmonton Union. The movement, however, did not become widespread until the territorial organization came under the leadership of Mrs. S.J. Craig (of Olds) and Mrs. Louise McKinney (of Nanton) in 1904. When Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces in 1905 the work of the WCTU was carried on under joint leadership. In 1912, however, separate provincial organizations were created, including the Alberta Provincial Woman's Christian Temperance Union. In the past WCTU has worked for temperance, women's franchise, women's dower rights, minimum wages and mothers' allowances. In more recent years, despite declining memberships, it has been involved in anti-smoking and anti-pornography campaigns, and peace promotions.
