Biographical history

Alexander Godfrey was born in Mount Forest, Ontario. He went to Vancouver ca. 1887, where he set up a hardware store. In 1894 he moved his business to New Westminster, but was burned out in an 1898 fire. In 1899 he went to Atlin as an agent for Thomas Dunn & Company Hardware. Godfrey started his own store in Atlin, and ran, but lost, in a local election. He then moved his business to Dawson in 1900, and died there suddenly of pneumonia.

Custodial history

Mrs. J.E. Cunningham donated the original Godfrey papers in May 1972 to the City of Vancouver Archives, who donated copies of the letters to the Yukon Archives in 1981.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photocopies of nine letters that Alexander Godfrey wrote home to his wife and children from Atlin, B.C. and Dawson City, Yukon 1899-1900. He gives details of his business, interest in local politics and descriptions of life in Atlin and Dawson City.
