Custodial history

Dr. Abram Hoffer donated these records to the Saskatoon office, Saskatchewan Archives, in 2 accession in 1988 and 2006: S88-77 (October 3, 1988); and S2006-47 (October 11, 2006).

Scope and content

This series contains records relating to Dr. Hoffer's involvement with the American Schizophrenia Association/Foundation. Dr. Hoffer was instrumental in forming the American Schizophrenia Association in 1964, serving as a member of its Board for many years. The organization was known as the American Schizophrenia Foundation from 1965-1970, and in 1971, after briefly resuming its former name, it became a division of the Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research.

The records in this series are arranged in three sub-series: General Correspondence; Miscellaneous; and Local Organizations. Arranged chronologically, the general correspondence files contain correspondence, chiefly between Dr. Hoffer and the Executive Director, concerning the day-to-day business of the organization. These files also contain copies of minutes, financial statements, reports and other such documents. The founding of the ASF/F is documented in early files in this sub-series, and the correspondence appears to be quite complete for the entire period.

The Miscellaneous sub-series contains files relating to publications, the Committee on Therapy, and a special Board meeting and luncheon in honor of Dr. Linus Pauling in 1971. These files are in alphabetical order by file title.

Correspondence between Dr. Hoffer and individuals associated with various ASA/ASF chapters throughout the United States and elsewhere comprise the Local Organizations sub-series. Arrangement of these files is alphabetical by locality (city, state or country.)

Researchers interested in this organization should also consult the General Correspondence Files in (Series 410-3) for Dr. Hoffer's correspondence with other individuals involved with the ASA/F.
