Biographical history

Andrew MacLeod, the son of Kenneth MacLeod and Margaret MacPherson, was born in the New London, Prince Edward Island, area in 1856. He had eight siblings: William H., Annie, Eliza, Alma, George, Edgar, Barbara, and Amelia. Andrew married Joanna Profit (1860-1943), of Eel Creek, with whom he had three children: Emeline (1885-1964), William P. (1887-1983), and K. Heath (1891-1977).

In 1893, Andrew purchased a farm to the south of the Irishtown Road from a John Burke. K. Heath, his wife, and children lived on the family farm as did Emeline, who never married. Andrew died there in 1951 at the age of 95 and was buried in the cemetery at Geddie Memorial Church in New London.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of 8 diaries of Andrew MacLeod copied onto two 35 mm microfilm reels. The first reel was filmed in December 1984 and contains 7 volumes spanning the time period 1902-1924, 1928-1936, and 1939-1942. The second reel, filmed in April 1985, contains 1 volume spanning the period 1936-1939.

In his diary entries, Andrew describes the weather conditions, his daily farm activities as well as those of members of his family, the places and people they visited, and those individuals who visited the farm. He gives accounts of events which occurred in the Burlington/Irishtown area including Sunday School picnics, prayer meetings, funerals, and weddings.
