Biographical history
Andrew Stewart was born in Albion Township, Ontario and moved to Manitoba after graduating from Victoria University in Toronto in 1879. After working for the Methodist Church and as a public school inspector in Manitoba, he became the pastor of Fort Rouge Methodist Church in Winnipeg in 1889, and, a year later, became chair of the theology, Hebrew and Old Testament department at Wesley College. From 1912 to 1915, he served as principal of Wesley College.
Custodial history
Audrey Irwin Harper, Stewart's granddaughter, donated the papers to the University of Winnipeg Archives in 1986.
Scope and content
The papers are arranged into three series, including personal files, charters of various student organizations, and financial records related to students and Wesley College. The first series consists of Stewart’s family tree (c. 1925) and handwritten articles, including “The Problem of the City,” “The Real Origin of Missionary Work,” and “The Position of the Prophet in the State.” The second series consist of copies of the first edition of VOX Wesleyana published in January 1897, and the founding charters for a number of student organizations in Wesley College, including Debating Society, Y.W.C.A., Dramatic Society, VOX Wesleyana, Athletic Associations, Constitution of the Student Body of Wesley College, and the W.S.A., which likely date to c. 1897. The third series consists of financial records related to students at Wesley College from 1899 to 1915, and includes a Treasurer’s Book of the Educational Fund, Manitoba and North-West Conference of the Methodist Church.
