Biographical history

Annie MacKelvie (1872-1953) was the oldest of four children born to Neil MacKelvie and Lizzie Stewart of Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Her father worked as a schoolteacher and later as manager of the Union Bank which was absorbed by the Bank of Nova Scotia. Annie left PEI to train as a nurse in Boston. When her father died in 1918 she was living in Spokane, Washington with her husband A. H. Sonneman. Annie's funeral in September 1953 was held from the MacKelvie home on Upper Central Street, Summerside, where her sister Roberta resided.

Custodial history

The item was donated to the MacNaught History Centre and Archives in 2001 by local resident D. R. Morrison. It came into his possession when he discovered it in an oak bookcase that he purchased at an estate auction held at the MacKelvie property around 1963. Miss Roberta MacKelvie (d. 1964) moved to a nursing home in Charlottetown and left the property to the Summerside Presbyterian Church.

Scope and content

The lined notebook, inscribed "Annie MacKelvie, City Hospital, Boston 1895 & 1896," contains handwritten notes taken during lectures on nursing care. The first entry, dated 4 January 1895, is entitled "Surgical Dressings". The book includes notes on various medical topics such as typhoid fever, gastric ulcers, and pulse. The notebook also includes an index.
