Biographical history

Jim Boss was born in 1871. His traditional name was Kashxóot, which means "Pound the table with fist". For over forty years he was the traditional Chief of the Ta'an Kwach'an - the Laberge band. He worked as a guide and trader between the coastal and inland First Nations. During the gold rush Jim Boss worked with the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) as special constable and taught them survival bush skills. He built and operated his own roadhouse on the shore of Lake Laberge. As leader of his people he petitioned the government in 1900 and 1902 to recognize and protect the rights of natives to their traditional lands. He also pressured the government not to sell alcohol to Indians. Jim Boss died January 17, 1950.
