Biographical history

Henry Clay (Harry) Bowers was a doctor who travelled to the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897-1898. He mined for three years and then returned to the United States. Harry met and married Blanche, in 1902, and they had two children, William Holmes and Ada-Marie. Dr. Bowers frequently spoke about his life and adventures. Blanche took notes and after his death wrote a manuscript about his life.

Custodial history

Donated by Martha Franklin in 2000.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a copy of a manuscript written by Blanche W. Bowers, "The Life of Henry Clay Bowers". The manuscript follows Bowers' early life, the trip to the Klondike and his three-year struggle to find gold in the Yukon, and his return to Seattle. The bulk of the manuscript is about Bowers' journey along the coast to St. Michael, his trip up the Yukon River to Dawson City, and his work in the Klondike Gold Fields. Included are copies of a map of his route and photographs of his family.
