Biographical history

The British Columbia Centennial Church Extension Fund was established in 1966, at the 18th meeting of Provincial Synod. The meeting was called in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the joining of the two B.C. colonies. It was decided that all gifts and bequests designated for church extension were to be accumulated in this Fund. The Finance Committee will be in charge of the disbursement of the money, as authorized by the Provincial House of Bishops. As a result of a motion passed in the House of Bishops (January, 1967), a portion of the fund will be deposited in a Vancouver Foundation account. The remainder of the Fund, will be deposited in a trust company account to be available for immediate needs. The Rev. Doctor Norman D.B. Larmonth was appointed as a special representative of the Fund. He worked tirelessly to build up the capital of the Fund from its inception in 1966 until his death in March 1976. In the year end report (January 31, 1976), Dr. Larmonth noted that over $300,000.00 had been raised, with the expenses being just over $2000.00. The Fund's first major priority was to provide monies for capital development at the Sorrento Lay Training Centre. David Rolfe, Provincial Synod treasurer, handled accounting for the Fund. When he retired as treasurer in 1975, he continued as the Fund treasurer until his position was transferred back to the Provincial Synod treasurer in 1979. The Special Fund Statement of Changes in Fund Balances (December 31, 1990) indicated that the remaining monies in the Centennial Church Extension Fund in 1989 ($6,254.00) were transferred to Reserves for the General Fund. The Centennial Fund, as a special fund, had a zero balance in 1990. Fund correspondence indicates that a $5,000.00 bequest was made to the Fund in 1987. Subsequent financial statements (up to Provincial Synod 2000) record the interest from the Vancouver Foundation portion of the original fund as revenue in the General Fund - Statement of Revenue and Expenditures and Accumulated Surplus.
