Biographical history

Bruce Mitchell (1944 - ) is a geographer, professor, and university administrator at University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario. He received his BA and MA from the University of British Columbia, and PhD from the University of Liverpool. In 1969 Bruce Mitchell became a Professor of Geography at the University of Waterloo. In addition to teaching and research, he has held administrative positions at the University of Waterloo, including Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research for the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Associate Vice President Academic, and Associate Provost Academic and Student Affairs. Mitchell’s research specialization is the institutional and policy aspects of water management, and integrated resource and environmental management. He was the Academic Co-Director of the Bali Sustainable Development Project in Indonesia, and was a team member of a project focused on land and water management in Sokoto State, Nigeria. He was a team member in a collaborative environmental research program with the University of Madras, India. He was the Co-Director of a University Consortium on the Environment project in Sulawesi, Indonesia. He is a member of the Executive Board of the International Water Resources Association, and a Past President of the Canadian Water Resources Association. He has served as a consultant to or advisor for provincial and federal governments in Canada, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and UNESCO in Paris, the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, the International Joint Commission, the Government of Western Australia, the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, and private consulting firms in Canada. Mitchell has received the Award for Scholarly Distinction in Geography from the Canadian Association of Geographers, a Distinguished Teacher Award from the University of Waterloo, the first annual Faculty of Environmental Studies Research Lecture Award at the University of Waterloo, the Service to Ontario Geography Award from the Canadian Association of Geographers, Ontario Division, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Water Resources Association. He is Concurrent Professor at Nanjing University and Honorary Professor at the Dalian University of Technology, both in China, and in 2005 was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Fellow, International Water Resources Association.
