Biographical history

Bruce Powell grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and trained in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the early days of World War II. He came to Prince Edward Island in 1943 to be an instructor at the No. 1 General Reconnaissance School at the RCAF Station Summerside. He and another officer roomed with the Wyatt sisters at 85 Spring Street. Bruce maintained a lifelong friendship with Wanda Wyatt and kept in touch with her from his home in Calgary. He last visited Summerside in 1989.

Custodial history

The materials were brought to the MacNaught History Centre and Archives in 2001 by Bruce Powell's daughter Pam and her husband Mel Zimmerman of Calgary.

Scope and content

The collection consists of various clippings and souvenirs including a 1941 graduation dinner program of the No. 7 Air Observers School in Manitoba, a 1993 pamphlet from a church in Scopwick, England where RCAF men are buried, and letters from Wanda Wyatt. The photographs are mainly of Miss Wyatt. A large photo shows the 1944 staff and instructors at the No. 1 G.R. School in Summerside.
