Biographical history

The Buffalo Lakes New Horizon Group was organized in 1978 to create a community history book, "Buffalo Trails". Members of the group included Graham McFarlane, Mr. and Mrs. Arvid Moe, Ruth and Ken Christensen, Willy Obinawka, Mr. and Mrs. George Yates, Pete Ganzeveld, Pete Student, Anson Norman and Dan Sommerville. The first meeting was held on March 14, 1978 at the home of Helen Student. The discussions ranged from the naming the book, the book’s cover design and exploring the process of getting the book published.
In May 1978, a financial branch for the group was created. The President of the new group was Pete Ganzeveld, with Arvid Moe as secretary and Graham McFarlane and William Student sharing the position of secretary. The financial branch made decisions on the money that needed to be spent before the book was published and what to do with the income generated by book sales.
These New Horizon groups spent many hours planning, attending workshops, gathering the stories and photographs, typing, and proof-reading the entries for the book. They received a grant to from Alberta Culture, as well as money from the New Horizons organization.
March 19, 1979 was the official opening day of sales. Stanley Moe was the master of ceremonies, the high school band played, and Graham McFarlane and William Student were presented with gold covered copies of the book in thanks for their efforts. The Edmonton office of the New Horizon Group presented the Buffalo Lakes New Horizon group with a scroll in appreciation for their efforts to benefit retired people in their community.
In 1989 the New Horizon Group wrote a cheque to the Buffalo Lakes Ladies Club giving them the remainder of monies raised from book sales. It is the last entry in the books.
