The 1st Canadian Army was the most senior Canadian formation during the Second World War and was formed in early 1942. General Andrew Mcnaughton was placed in charge. 1st Canadian Army Headquarters did not arrive in Normandy until mid-July 1944. As a result it became only operational as of 23 July 1944. The 1st canadian Army participated in the Battle of Normandy, the Battle of the Scheldt, and for the last weeks of the war was tasked with clearing the Netherlands of German forces.
