Biographical history

Captain Joseph Smith operated a general store located on Main Street in Antigonish, N.S. He was a native of Ireland, removed to Nova Scotia circa 1811 and settled in West River, Antigonish County. He spent many years at sea and retired in 1833. After his retirement, he established the general store. Smith married Ruth Irish and they had several children. Following Smith's death, Ruth operated the Smith Hotel on the town's Main Street.

Records were donated by Professor Ann Stone of Georgeville, Antigonish County, N.S. It is unknown how it came into her possession.
