History
Helen Valentine was born in Scotland on January 28, 1920 and came to Prince Rupert when she was six months old. Her father, Ernest Valentine, worked at the Dry Dock. Helen graduated from King Edward High School in 1938, worked for the Canadian Fish and Cold Storage Company during the Second World War, and after that with the Unemployment Insurance Commission. She left Prince Rupert in 1946 to go to university and in 1950 graduated from Oregon State with a degree in Home Economics. She moved to New York to work for General Foods Corp as an editor, and there she met and married Emery Carlson, a chemical engineer from Kansas. The couple settled in New Jersey. Helen died on December 5, 2011 in Chatham, New Jersey.
