Biographical history

The Cavendish Literary Society was established on 19 February 1886 for the "mutual improvement of its members through lectures, debates, and the establishment and maintenance of a circulating library". Programs of meetings which were held bi-weekly at the Cavendish Hall throughout the fall and winter months included lectures, debates, concerts, and social evenings. Some topics addressed were prohibition, country life vs. city life, abolition of capital punishment, enfranchisement of women, etc. The last recorded meeting of the Cavendish Literary Society was held on 7 January 1924.

Custodial history

The original minute book was removed from the Cavendish Hall before it was torn down early in 1960.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of a volume containing the original minutes of the Cavendish Literary Society covering the time period 19 February 1886 to 7 January 1924 and a 164 page typed transcript of the same minutes. Included in the first pages of the minutes are the constitution and by-laws of the Society as well as the regulations for the management of the library.
