Biographical history
The Road and Bridge Committee was composed of the mayor and four aldermen. The mandate of the committee was to oversee the construction and maintenance of Guelph's streets, roads and bridges. The precise dates of creation and dissolution of this committee are not known
Custodial history
The custodial history of these records, prior to their transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is not known or documented. It is believed that these records were transferred to the Guelph Public Library archives in the 1980's.
Scope and content
Series consists of the minutes of Road and Bridge Committee meetings for the years 1869-1879. Included in this series are reports of the street inspector and the committee with respect to the condition, construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the Town of Guelph, and committee recommendations to Council regarding the development and improvement of roads and bridges, sidewalks, and ditches. These records document the role of the committee in managing the development of Guelph's road transportation system.
It is believed that the Road and Bridge Committee was superceded by the Board of Works Committee in early 1879, as the mandates of these two committees overlap with respect to mandate over road, bridge and sidewalk construction and maintenance.

General note
The name of the committee is recorded as the Committee on Streets, Highways & Bridges from March 1874 to early January 1876 in the minutes. The committee's name reverted back to the Road and Bridge Committee in the minutes of the January 21, 1876 meeting.
