The public-sector holdings consist of records created by the civic government from 1886 to the present. These include City Council minutes and by-laws as well as records created by City Departments and Boards such as City Clerk's, Engineering, Finance, Fire & Rescue, Health, Park Board, Permits and Licenses, Planning, Police Court, and School Board offices. Private sector records include those from pioneer families, politicians, social activists, entrepreneurs and community organizations reflecting the social, political, cultural and economic life of the city from the 1870s. Other documents include over 2,000 maps and plans, a documentary art collection, hundreds of films and videos, and over a million photographic images. The Archives also acquires publications created by City Departments and maintains a 2,500-volume library relating to B.C. and Vancouver history.

There are specialized searches for <a href="http://vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/archives/photos/index.htm" target="_blank">photographs</a> (ca. 58,000 digitized), <a href="http://vancouver.ca/ArchivesSearch/SearchMovies.aspx" target="_blank">moving images</a> and an index of <a href="http://vancouver.ca/ArchivesSearch/SearchCM.aspx" target="_blank">City Council resolutions</a>. Other features of the site include: information about functions and activities, hours of operation, staff, a series of User/Research Guides, and information on donating material, on joining the Friends of the Archives, and on current exhibits.
