Le premier numéro du journal "La Frontière" paraît le 24 juin 1937. La création de cet hebdomadaire répond alors aux aspirations de la population canadienne-française de Rouyn-Noranda désireuse de posséder un journal capable de défendre ses intérêts. À l'époque, la presse anglophone domine largement l'information en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Sous la direction d'Éric Maurice et de Julien Massicotte, "La Frontière" devient rapidement un journal d'envergure régionale. En 1953, les Oblats de Marie-Immaculée, déjà propriétaires du journal "Le Droit" d'Ottawa, acquièrent "La Frontière" et continuent de promouvoir la même idéologie. Julien Massicotte demeure directeur de l'information. Plus tard, vers 1964, Jean-Pierre Bonneville achète le journal et le conserve jusqu'à sa vente au groupe Québécor inc. en 1974
