Biographical history

The District of Sumas was incorporated in 1892 and consisted of what is now the rural and major portion of the District of Abbotsford. In 1973, the District of Sumas amalgamated with the Village of Abbotsford to become the District of Abbotsford.

Custodial history

The records were donated to the museum by the District of Abbotsford after the amalgamation of the District of Sumas and the Village of Abbotsford in 1973.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence, petitions, daybooks, letterbooks, ledgers, purchasing records, payroll records, permits, social assistance claims, financial reports, bank statements, Civil Defence general account records, Sumas Drainage, Dyking and Development District assessment notices and receipts, tax sale information, Court of Revision appeals, property assessment cards, and a variety of receipts and permits issued by various municipal officers. The fonds also includes records of the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford General Hospital and the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford Fire Department.
