Biographical history
Michael A. Laffin was born in 1918 at New Waterford, N.S. During World War II he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following the war, he attended McGill University where he studied dentistry. In 1963 he was elected to the Provincial Legislature as a representative for Cape Breton Centre, and served until 1974. He was re-elected in 1981 and served until 1987 as Minister Without Portfolio and later Minister of Housing.
Custodial history
Records were donated by Dr. Laffin in three accessions. Most of the printed material was transferred to the University Library.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of correspondence and clippings related to constituency business on topics such as housing, schools, hospitals, the Finnis Report, employment, grants, and a few personal clippings, 1963-1988; files relating to Dr. Laffin's work in the House of Assembly, including speeches, correspondence, and clippings, 1963-1986; election material including clippings, pamphlets and speeches, 1960s and 1970s; five files of correspondence and memoranda pertaining to housing while Dr. Laffin was Minister of Housing, 1983-1986; material relating to coal mining affairs in eastern Cape Breton including the Donald Report (1966), strip mining at Gardiner Mines (1982-1987), Dominion Coal Workers' Relief Fund (1980-1983); Cape Breton Regional Hospital files, 1966-1987; files on Nova Scotia School Boards and a brief on an Acadian School presented by the Cape Breton District School Board (1984); material on provincial ombudsman (1971-1981); material on the Senior Citizens Secretariat (1981-1986); memorandum from Dr. Laffin to Premier Buchanan (1980) re horse racing industry in Nova Scotia; material on the Kiwanis Swimming Pool in Sydney (1975-1985); a report of the Legislative Assembly Mines Committee (1965).
