Biographical history
Dunbar Heights United Church began in 1914 as a community Sunday School. The school was, in the fullest sense of the word, a Union School with scholars and teachers of several Protestant denominations studying and worshipping together. Toward the end of 1921 it was apparent that plans should be considered for the inauguration of worship services. More people were moving into the district and the Sunday School was growing. On January 23, 1922 a meeting was held in Dunbar Heights Sunday School to consider its future. Two motions were passed: one was that the Sunday School be carried on as a Union school under the auspices of some denomination; the other, that the Presbyterian Church be asked to take over the cause and conduct it in the best interests of the community. When the Union congregation asked to be taken under the wing of the Presbyterian Church, the Presbytery of Westminster appointed the Session of Knox Church, Kerrisdale, as Interim Session. Knox Church continued in this capacity until December 31, 1922. In 1925 after Church Union, Dunbar Heights Union Church adopted the present name of Dunbar Heights United Church. An increase in Sunday School attendance soon called for additional accommodations. On October 31, 1926 a dedication service was held at the new School and gymnasium. In the late 1940s an increasing population and growing interest in the church required the building of a new church. The church was officially opened and dedicated on March 18, 1951. Dunbar Heights United Church continues to serve its congregation in Vancouver.
