Biographical history

E. Gertrude Butler, a Charlottetown resident was the first lay woman to graduate from St. Dunstan's University, Prince Edward Island in 1944. Prior to her attendance women, with the exception of those belonging to religious orders, were not allowed to attend St. Dunstan's.

The fonds consists of a certified copy of a letter from J. A. Sullivan, Archbishop of Kingston to Gertrude Butler regretting his inability to attend her graduation and remarking on her role in having St. Dunstan's open its doors to lay women. There is also a note on the letter to the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation from E. G. O'Donnell.
