Biographical history

Edward James Glave was born in England on September 13, 1862. At age 21 he was sent by the Bureau of the International Association of Brussels to serve under Henry M. Stanley on the Congo River in Africa. He came to North America for a lecture tour in 1889, and was invited by "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" to join an expedition it was sending to Alaska. He was named executive officer and artist of the expedition, and while in Alaska, Glave was leader of a party that first explored the Tatshenshini River to its junction with the Alsek River, and the Alsek to its mouth at Dry Bay. In 1891 he returned to Alaska with Jack Dalton, and the two established a trail from Haines to Kluane Lake which was later known as the Dalton Trail. Glave returned to Africa and died at Underhill, Matadi, Belgian Congo on May 12, 1895.
