Biographical history
Emma R. Kaufman (1881-1979) was a missionary with the Y.W.C.A. to Japan and to Japanese Canadians. She was born in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario. She studied at Ontario Ladies' College, Victoria University, Methodist Training School, and teacher's college in New York. She visited, studied, and worked in Japan, 1909-1915, and became General Secretary of the Tokyo Young Women's Christian Association (Y.W.C.A.) in 1918. She worked to educate and expand opportunities for Japanese women, and returned to Canada in 1940. She supported interned Japanese Canadians during World War II; she also worked for the Y.W.C.A. in other capacities.
