Biographical history

Né à Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, le 14 avril 1680, Jean-Alexis Lemoine dit Monière est le fils de Jean Lemoine, trafiquant de la région de Trois-Rivières, et de Madeleine de Chavigny de Berchereau. Il émigre tôt à Montréal, lieu de départ des convois pour l'Ouest. Il passe toute sa jeunesse à voyager et à faire la traite des fourrures pour le compte des autres, notamment pour Antoine Laumet de La Mothe-Cadillac. Vers 1712, il commence à financer ses propres voyages à Michillimakinac et ceux de quelques compagnons-voyageurs. En 1715, il ouvre une boutique à Montréal et oeuvre surtout dans le commerce des fourrures. Il épouse à Québec, en premières noces, le 22 mars 1715, Marie-Louise Zemballe; à Montréal, en secondes noces, en 1726, Marie-Josephte de Couagne, fille de Charles de Couagne, marchand de Montréal. Il meurt à Montréal le 23 juin 1754; à l'âge de 74 ans
