Biographical history
Né en 1710, Thomas Jefferys vit à Londres sur la rue Red Lyon, près de St. John's Gate (1732-1750). Il se marie et déménage au 5, Charing Cross, St. Martin Lane; son magasin est situé au 487, rue Strand. Prolifique cartographe anglais, en 1748, il est nommé géographe auprès du Prince de Galles, Fréderic, devenu plus tard le roi Georges III. Son premier travail « Plan of London and Westminster » date de 1732. En 1747, il collabore au « Map of Staffs » de Parson et Bowles et en 1749, il aide Thomas Kitchin dans le « Small English Atlas ». Il grave aussi des cartes pour « Geography » de Salmon en 1749 et le « Gentlemen Magazine » de Caves. Il édite la dernière édition de l'« Atlas » de Saxton en 1752 et son « Maritime Ports of France » en 1761. Entre 1751 et 1768, il publie plusieurs cartes sur les colonies anglaises de l'Amérique du nord: « Virginia et Nova Scotia » de Fry et Jefferson, « Carolina » de Brahm et « St. Lawrence » du Capitaine Cook. Le volume « Spanish Islands and West Indies » en 1762 et « Topography of North America and West Indies » en 1768 complètent sa production américaine. Son talent d'arpenteur est utilisé lorsqu'il publie six séries de plans de comtés anglais. Cette production, très exigeante au point de vue financier, a tôt fait de l'acculer à la banqueroute en 1765. De ce fait, Robert Sayer acquiert la majorité de ses documents et publie, avec John Bennet, les futures éditions de l'oeuvre, surtout « American Atlas », « North American Pilot », et « West Indian Atlas ». Pour sa part, Thomas Jefferys continue son travail avec William Faden (1750-1836), jusqu'à sa mort. Il meurt en 1771 à l'âge de 61 ans
Custodial history
Les services judiciaires de la direction régionale du ministère de la Justice, lors de leur déménagement dans leurs nouveaux locaux, en septembre 1971, ont laissé ces documents cartographiques, aux Archives nationales du Québec à Montréal
