Canadian playwright and novelist. Born in Deep Creek in the Athabasca region of Alberta on July 27, 1932. Died in Summerland, British Columbia, on November 18, 1987. Biographical information available in The Oxford companion to Canadian literature, 2nd ed., p. 1027-1028; The Oxford companion to Canadian theatre, p. 479-481; and in The ecstasy of resistance: a biography of George Ryga, by James F. Hoffman (Toronto : ECW Press, 1995).

Fonds consists of personal and business correspondence; and manuscripts of and material relating to G. Ryga's poetry, short stories, novels, musical works, essays, addresses, screenplays, and radio, television and stage plays. Two small appendices (MsC 153, 154) consisting of material relating to G. Ryga and acquired from other sources include correspondence and photocopies of an essay by and articles about G. Ryga. Accession 614/97.3 consists of a long-play recording, The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, words by George Ryga, music by Ann Mortifee. (Ann Mortifee, vocalist; Chief Dan George, Ann Mortifee, Peter Haworth, voices; Paul Horn, flute; various musicians.) (Vancouver: Kerygma Records, [1973?]).
