Biographical history
The Loyal Orange Lodge Association is a Protestant institution of brotherhood founded in England in 1690. The first branch of the Loyal Orange Lodge on Prince Edward Island was Boyne L.O.L., No. 614, in 1855. The The R. W. (Right Worshipable) Grand Orange Lodge of Prince Edward Island was organized in Charlottetown in 1861 and was incorporated in 1891. The first Grand Master was George P. Tanton. The Orange Order established the first Protestant children's orphanage in PEI in 1922 at Mount Herbert and regularly provided assistance to the orphanage in the form of needed supplies. The Grand Orange Lodge also contributed to charitable organizations, including the Protestant Children's Fund, the Grand Orange Lodge of British America Benefit Fund, and the Orange Foundation.
Custodial history
The 1932 and 1976 annual proceedings were found in the Orange Hall in Edmonton, Alberta by Ian Smythe, Secretary of the Orange Lodge of Alberta.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the records of the Grand Orange Lodge of Prince Edward Island. The fonds includes bound and typed proceedings of annual meetings (1862-1998), District, County and Grand Lodge returns (1978-1999), annual reports (1962-1994), a roll book (1927-1978) and correspondence. A certificate of incorporation of the Heartsville Primary Lodge (1866) and some code and ritual books are also included. Some information about the Protestant Orphanage and the Protestant Children's Trust, Maritime Orange Council, and other activities can be found in the fonds. Finally, the records include an oversized photograph of delegates from the Grand Orange Lodge, Grand Black Chapter and Ladies Orange Lodge Association of British America taken in front of Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, in 1918.
