Biographical history
Ronald Spickett, 1926- , was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and trained as an artist with Augustus Kenderdine at the Regina Sketch Club. He was an editorial cartoonist with the Regina Leader-Post newspaper, and served in the Canadian Navy. After the war (1946-1949) he attended the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary, Alberta and later he spent a year at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Spickett was a window display artist in Toronto from 1949 to 1955, then taught at the Alberta College of Art for ten years, 1957-1967, followed by fifteen years at the University of Calgary. He studied Zen Buddism and retired from painting to devote his time to spiritiual activities, poetry and music. He is called by his Buddhist name Gyo-Zo. Spickett and his wife Anna Barbara Rosoku, 1930-2003, had three sons, Ronald, Richard and Rae.
