Custodial history

Scope and content

An official agreement between the Minister of Railways and Canals of Canada and the government of Prince Edward Island to build a bridge over the Hillsborough River was signed on the 18 April 1900. Work began in the spring of 1901 and commenced in 1903, built under contract by M.J. Hanley Company, Toronto. Prior to this bridge, a ferry had operated between Charlottetown and Hillsborough. In 1958, the Hillsborough River Bridge was rebuilt. The O. J. McCulloch & Co. from Montreal were employed by the provincial government to look after the design and supervise the construction of the bridge. The final work on the new bridge was completed in 1961.

This fonds consists of four architectural drawings for the Hillsborough River Bridge built between 1958-1961. The information in the drawings relate to piers two and three, abutment and piers one through four, test pile data and boring logs, and general plans. The drawings were done by consulting engineers O. J. McCulloch and Co., Montreal, and were approved by R. White, on 26 September 1958.
