Biographical history
Hugh Doherty, the son of Hugh and Bridget Doherty, was born 8 March 1853 at Saint John, New Brunswick. He married Bridget Tole, probably in the 1880s, and they had no fewer than four children: Catherine, Grace Helena, Mary Agnes, and William Leo (1890-1910). Hugh Doherty operated a grocery store in Saint John for many years. He died at his residence, 299 Charlotte Street, on 7 October 1926, at age 73 years. He is buried in the New Catholic Cemetery in Saint John.

Scope and content
This fonds consists of a single item -- an account book for Hugh Doherty's grocery store located in Saint John, N.B. The account book contains itemized accounts for each customer, showing the quantity of goods purchased and the amount charged. Often the customer's occupation is given.
