Custodial history

Dr. Abram Hoffer donated these records to the Saskatoon office, Saskatchewan Archives, in 3 accession between 1988 and 2006: S88-77 (October 3, 1988); S2003-12 (March 10, 2003); and S2006-47 (October 11, 2006).

Scope and content

The records in this series document Dr. Hoffer's association with the Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research. Dr. Hoffer was instrumental in establishing the Institute, which arose out of the American Schizophrenia Association/Foundation in 1971. Hoffer served as its president until 1984. The foundation closed in 1993.

This series is arranged into three sub-series: General Correspondence, Miscellaneous; and Local Organizations. Arranged chronologically, the General Correspondence sub-series consists of Dr. Hoffer's correspondence, chiefly with the Institute's Executive Director, concerning the day-to-day operations of the Huxley Institute. The files also contain copies of minutes, financial statements, reports and the like.

The Miscellaneous sub-series includes files pertaining to bylaws, board meetings, committees, fundraising, financial maters, and physician training and referrals. These are arranged in alphabetical order by file title.

The Local Organizations sub-series includes correspondence between Dr. Hoffer and officials in local Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research chapters throughout the United States. These files are arranged in alphabetical order by name of locality (city or state.)

Researchers interested in this organization should also consult the General Correspondence Files (Series 410-3) for Dr. Hoffer's correspondence with other individuals involved in the Huxley Institute for Biosocial Research.
