The fonds consists of copies of newspaper articles concerning Captain Murray's personal life and career and historic events in the history of the PEI ferry service such as the carrying of the Olympic torch in 1987 and the last trip of the John Hamilton Gray on 24 April 1997. There is also a poster of the four vessels of the PEI fleet taken on 28 April 1997 in the shadow of the new Confederation Bridge. Photographs include two of Capt. Murray, one of Alexander (Sandy) Muttart an ice-boat hauler and great grandfather of Ralph Murray and one from 1885 which shows the mail being hauled by sled to shore from the iceboat. There is also a photograph of Captain Murray and an audiocassette of an interview with him on 8 October 1993, the day the Confederation Bridge agreement was signed. The audiocassette also contains two songs written by Captain Murray

The fonds consists of a photographic copy of a duplicate of a ticket for passage "between Cape Traverse and Cape Tormentine, from board ice to board ice, with ice boats carrying mails" in 1886. The phraseology of the ticket seems to indicate that this was for a passenger who would be assisting with the pulling of the boats across the ice. The fare was $2.00.

Prior to the coming of the ice-breaking ferries, mail and passengers were transported between Prince Edwad Island and the mainland by means of small open boats which sailed in whatever open water there was and were equipped with runners and straps by which they were hauled over the board ice by crew members and passengers. If a passenger chose not to assist in the hauling, he paid more for his ticket.

This fonds consists of four scrapbooks of newspaper articles written from 1979 to 1986 by "Ole Salt" Lorne Johnston, a notebook containing notes and story drafts, 33 files of notes and 2 files of articles on various subjects including: ferries, iceboat racing, Lower Montague, and schooner captains. There is also: a typescript copy of "Notes from My Diary" (essentially a weather diary) for the years 1919 to 1956, newspaper articles, a letter from Johnnie Williams, and a letter from Gary MacDougall.

This scrapbook contains photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, handwritten and typed notes concerning the early history of transportation on the Northumberland Strait. It includes images and information concerning the ice boats, early steamships, ice-breaking vessels, coast guard ships and the crews who manned them.

This collection consists of five photographs of the ice boat service between Prince Edward Island and the mainland as well as a daily ice boat log kept between 9 February 1895 and 10 April 1895 by Captains Muttart and W. N. Allen.

This collection is composed of four series including the Journal of T.C. Muncey, telegraph operator at Cape Traverse, Schurman family papers, scrapbooks of newspaper articles on churches on PEI, and a schedule of rates of pay and rules governing the service of conductors, baggagemen, brakemen and yardmen on the Intercolonial and P.E.I. Railways, 1913.

The collection consists of a journal (1886-1895), and a letter book (1897-1903), which was collected at the Cape Traverse boat house and telegraph office by Townsend Muncey. The journal documents the winter mail service from Cape Traverse, PEI, to Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick. The weather, ice conditions, and the time of the ice boats arrival and departure with the mail were recorded by the individuals making the crossings and were kept at the boathouse by Townsend Muncey. The letter book contains copies of letters sent to the Marine and Fisheries Department in Charlottetown, lists of boatmen and their respective positions, statements of tickets, and financial statements of the boathouse and telegraph office.
