Toronto General Hospital ephemera collection

The Toronto General Hospital ephemera collection is an assembly of material in various formats that have been accumulated by the UHN Archives from a variety of disparate sources including, but not limited to, family members of former staff or students, other repositories, or anonymous donations. Collection consists of textual records, publications, photographs and objects. Material in the collection relates to the history of the hospital, its staff or students.

File 2 contains a recipe for Butter Soup, directions for making lactic acid milk from culture, and notes on letterhead for Dr. Miriam A. Brick.

File 12 includes photos of J.R.F. (Frank) Mills, Bruce Tovee, Wallace Scott, Roche Robertson, L.C. Mongomery, J.A. MacFarlane, and an Oxford Vaporizer (Anaesthesia Machine).

File 14 includes pictures of Drs. E.H. Botterell, K.G. McKenzie and Tom Morley, from Neurosurgery, and Dr. Mary Tom from Neuropathology.

Finance Department records

Series consists of records created and collected by the TGH Finance Department and predecessor bodies, and by individual executive officers responsible for maintaining the general financial records of the TGH. Records include financial statements, ledgers, accounts payable records, comparative expense analyses, financial and statistical returns, correspondence as well as deeds and endowments.

Patient records

Sub-series consists of patient case files. File 15.2.1 consists of one bound volume of patient records created in the TGH Medical Division 1913, containing files numbered 11601 - 11700 and identified as “Vol. 93 Medical - nervous”. File 15.2.2 consists of one bound volume of patient records created in the TGH military wards 1918 - 1919, containing files numbered 3401 - 3499, identified as “Vol. [24? 42?] Military Histories”, and classified by condition: Alimentary, Bones, Genito-Urinary, Glands, Joints, Nervous, Respiratory, Skin, Tendons, Vascular. File 15.2.3 contains the medical records of Leonard Thompson, the world’s first recipient of insulin (January 11, 1922) for control of diabetes mellitus.

Records include patient history, examination and progress notes, treatment record, urine and blood chart, clinical chart, bacteriologists’ reports.
