Young Offender Case Files series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used between 1976 and 1999 by the Saskatchewan Department of Social Services in its operation of the young offenders programs in the province as legislated by the federal Juvenile Delinquents Act (1908-1984) and Young Offenders Act (1984-2002). The series consists of case files for clients participating in the Alternative Measures Program (using non-judicial measures for resolution), Community Options (including probation, judicial interim release program, community service, restitution, etc.) and Custody Options (sentences served at open or secure custody facilities) streams within the system. Records were
maintained by case workers at the Department's various regional offices prior to transfer.

The series has been arranged into three sub-series: Alternative Measures; Community Options; and Custody Options.

Certain files in the Community Options sub-series include records related to open or secure custody sentences.

The types of records in this series include: client information sheets; behaviour assessment reports; anecdotal supervisory reports; correspondence; legal documents (summonses; subpoenas; warrants, consents for undertaking, probation orders, adjudication sheets); memoranda; incident reports; medical reports; psychological and psychiatric assessment reports; visitor lists; and personal effects lists.

Inmate Case Files series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used between 1891 and 1994 by the Dominion Department of Justice (1891-1906); the Department of the Attorney General (1906-1915); the Saskatchewan Department of Public Works (1906-1947); the Department of Social Welfare (1947-1949); the Department of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation (1949-1965); the Department of Welfare (1965-1972); the Department of Social Services (1972-1983); and the Department of Justice(1983-1994) for the administration of inmates housed in various correctional facilities throughout the province. These correctional facilities include the Regina Jail (Correctional Centre); the Prince Albert Jail (Correctional Centre); the Battleford Women's Gaol; the Prince Albert Women's Gaol; The Pine Grove Correctional Centre; the North Battleford Community Correctional Centre; and the Saskatoon Correctional Centre. The series consists of case files for each inmate and includes records documenting his/her remand prior to sentencing, incarceration and participation in rehabilitation programs during the term of his/her sentence. Records were maintained by staff at each correctional facility prior to transfer.

The types of records in this series include: charge sheets; warrants of committal upon conviction; intake sheets; property inventories; fingerprint charts; warrants remanding a prisoner; behaviour reports; admission and readmission reports; temporary absence permits; fine payment receipts; conditional release permits; community training residence submissions and reports; notices and reports on criminal appeals; and identification photographs.

Probation Case Files series

This series consists of records created, accumulated and used by the Saskatchewan Department of Welfare (1966-1972); Department of Social Services (1972-1983); Department of Northern Saskatchewan (1973-1981) and Department of Justice (1983-2000) in the administration of adult probation cases. The case files were maintained by probation officers within a network of regional offices throughout the province. In addition to case files from the standard probation program, the series includes case files of probationers enlisted in the Restitution; Impaired Drivers' Treatment; Bail Verification and Supervision; and Community Service Order programs.

The types of records in this series include: probation orders; intake forms; contact summary sheets; requests for pre-sentence reports; pre-sentence reports; criminal history reports from the Canadian Police Information Centre; offender classification profiles; risk assessment reports; anecdotal progress reports; attendance centre reports; review panel reports; applications to alter probation orders; closure sheets; memoranda and correspondence.

Child Protection Case Files series

This series consists of child protection and family services case files created and used by staff of the Saskatchewan Department of Social Services (and its
predecessors, the Department of Welfare, and the Department of Social Rehabilitation and successors, the Department of Community Resources and Employment and the Department of Community Resources) between 1949 and 2007. Department staff created these files while investigating situations meriting protection intervention, including: child abuse, neglect, abandonment or inadequate supervision; parental alcohol or drug abuse; and parent/teen conflict. This series also includes miscellaneous case files created by staff. These case files often documented preliminary investigations of suspected child protection concerns, but may also include a small number of child care and social assistance files.

The types of records in this series include: anecdotal summary reports of visits to clients by staff; memoranda; client registration forms; reports supplied by Mobile Crisis Services Inc.; agreements for foster care; intake recording sheets; case profile reports; transcripts of interviews; court orders and transcripts; psychological and/or psychiatric assessment reports; photocopies of birth certificates; photographs; and audio cassettes.

Saskatchewan Assistance Plan Case Files series

This series consists of a sample of Saskatchewan Assistance Plan (SAP) case files created and used primarily by staff of the Social Services Division of the Department of Northern Saskatchewan (but also the Department of Social Services, the Department of Welfare, and the Department of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation) between 1954 and 1982. Department staff created these files in the provision of financial assistance through the Saskatchewan Assistance Plan (prior to 1966 known as Social Aid) to residents of Saskatchewan in accordance to The Saskatchewan Assistance Act (and its predecessor enactment, The Social Aid Act). The series also consists of a small volume of Old Age Security Supplemental Allowance (OASSA) case file records. The OASSA program was discontinued in 1968 at which time recipients received assistance from the SAP and the federal Old Age Security Program.

The types of records in this series include: anecdotal client summary reports by staff; applications for assistance; transient aid authorization forms; applications for temporary health care coverage; declaration of circumstances forms; public assistance assessments; trustee's agreement forms; requisitions for goods and services; face sheets; client index registrations; means test decision sheets; file allotment slips; memoranda; and correspondence.
