Tuberculosis and the evolution of government responsibility for public health in Prince Edward Island

  • CA PCA Acc4140
  • Fonds
  • 1984-1990

The fonds consists of a B.A. Honours thesis by Helen Gill, University of Prince Edward Island, 1984, a paper by Douglas O. Baldwin and Helen Gill presented to the 1985 annual meeting of the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine, and an article by Douglas Baldwin from "Acadiensis", spring 1990. All three examine how the treatment of tuberculosis and the anti-T.B. movement affected the establishment of a provincial Department of Health in P.E.I. in 1931. They discuss the developments in the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, the establishment of sanataria, and the role the Red Cross, Public Health nurses and other groups played in this development.
