University of Manitoba Cyclotron Laboratory sous-fonds

  • UMASC UA 53 (A12-71)
  • Subfonds
  • 1957-1989

The Cyclotron Laboratory sous-fonds documents the research and construction of the cyclotron as well as additional changes over the project’s lifetime. The sous-fonds contains four series: Cyclotron Technical Drawings, Research Materials, a cyclotron drawing index and Photographs.

The cyclotron was conceptualized in 1957 when the head of the Physics Department, B.G. Whitmore, proposed the construction of a cyclotron at the University of Manitoba based on the prototype at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). With a $70,000 initial grant release, the construction began underneath the parking lot adjacent to the Allen Physics building on the Fort Garry Campus in 1959. Although the original proposal of the design was based on the UCLA cyclotron, almost all the design detail was completed by the staff at the University of Manitoba. The cyclotron vault, the shielding and the two experimental areas together occupied 5,000 square feet, while the control room and the electrical room took up another 2,000 square feet of floor area. The cyclotron was officially opened in 1965. It was the second cyclotron in Canada and the first in Western Canada.

The U of M cyclotron was considered a pioneer model of cyclotron design during that period, it being a spiral-ridge or sector-focused cyclotron. The sector-focused cyclotron is one of the most useful tools of nuclear physicists. Being the only negative hydrogen ion cyclotron operating between 20 MeV and 50 MeV in North America, it could generate beams of high quality and intensity in order to tackle some of the physics problems in atomic and subatomic physics that require such facilities. Axial injection was introduced to separate the ion source from the cyclotron itself, the source being housed in a building at ground level while the cyclotron was situated two floors below. This made it possible to improve the performance of the ion source and to develop a source of polarized ions without having to deal with the high radiation environment at the centre of the cyclotron.

Over the next two decades after the cyclotron opened, it attracted various physicists, engineers and students to the university to help assist with the project and made it a major turning point within the department.

In 1986, under the directorship of Dr. Jasper McKee, the cyclotron’s uses expanded to other areas of research other than nuclear physics. The Cyclotron Laboratory changed its name to Accelerator Centre to serve as the University Research Centre where interdisciplinary and applied research could be carried out in conjunction with external laboratories and/or the private sector. The Accelerator Centre ceased operation in 1989.

Mary and David Macaree

Sous-fonds contains records created and accumulated by Mary and David Macaree during the course of their preparation of the two publications '103 Hikes in Southwestern British Columbia' and '109 Walks in B.C.'s Lower Mainland'. Includes research notes on trails, photographs, maps and sample publications.

Board of Trustees of the Ontario Cancer Institute sousfonds

Sousfonds consists of minutes of meetings of the Board and their various subcommittees along with correspondence, reports, financial records, recommendations for staff appointments, curriculum vitae, hospital by-laws and other documentation referred to in the minutes. Sousfonds reflects the involvement of the Board with the establishment and maintenance of the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital, and the Board's relationship with the University of Toronto and other teaching hospitals. Files are arranged in series by committee, and then chronologically by date, as per original binders. Minutes of the Board had been kept in nine separate binders, within which minutes were filed in reverse chronological order. In addition, minutes from the Executive Committee comprised six separate binders, minutes of the Budget and Finance Committee comprised two separate binders and minutes from smaller subcommittees had their own individual binders. All files have been arranged in chronological order. The Office of the Secretary to the Board records have not been altered.

Sousfonds includes 17 series.

Department of Dietetics sous-fonds

The sous- fonds contains the records of the Dietetic department relating primarily to the history of the department and the creation and administration of the internship program. Records are primarily from 1967-2004, records arranged by year and subject. The records of the fonds were appraised and arranged by Shirley Layne as Director of the Dietetic Internship program at the closure of the program in 2004, before donation to the archives.
Sous-Fonds includes DVDs on the history of the department, HR materials, departmental newsletters, awards, staff scheduling books and policy manuals documenting the operation of the department and include information and photographs of anniversaries, graduations and hospital events.

Rural initiatives

The Rural Initiatives program was set up by Lethbridge Community College in the spring of 1989, as an experimental program designed to help rural people and communities help themselves in assessing their situations and looking to the future. A Milo Rural Initiatives group was formed in 1990, and was accepted as a Milo & District Agricultural Society Committee in June of 1992. Committee status was a benefit for the group as it meant that they wouldn’t have to pay for hall rental for the various activities they sponsored, and in addition, would be covered under the Ag Society’s liability insurance for all events.

The Rural Initiatives Committee spearheaded many ongoing community projects, such as pot luck meals welcoming new community members, Children’s Dinner Theatre, community business directories, volunteer appreciation events, and the bussing of area children to Vulcan for swimming lessons. Other major initiatives were the development of a 2.5 mile bike path from Milo out to Lake McGregor, and the coordination of Casino fundraisers through the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

In 2005, the Milo & District Agricultural Society Rural Initiatives Committee moved to disband, with their remaining funds being designated for bike path maintenance and the sponsorship of a community Christmas hayride / party.

The sous-fonds consists of minute books, correspondence, community reports and surveys, ledgers, photographs and ephemera relating to the activities of the Rural Initiatives Committee, much of it organized by the Rural Initiatives Committee in a large white binder.

The sous-fonds has been arranged into the following series: Working Papers, Meeting Minutes, Financial Records, Bike Path Project.
