University of Waterloo and Pragma Council files

Records in this series pertain to Marilou McPhedran's association with the University of Waterloo and her two terms, in 1994 and 2000, as Planner-in-Residence at the University of Waterloo's School of Planning. These records predominantly document McPhedran's work at the University of Waterloo during the fall of 2000, when she taught a seminar course titled "Building healthy communities : local to global human rights." Also included in this series are records pertaining to conferences of the Pragma Council, with which McPhedran became involved through her association with the University of Waterloo. File in this series include notes, course materials, correspondence, conference materials, memoranda, newspaper clippings, journal articles, and a CD-ROM.

Subject files

Series consists of records created and accumulated by Marilou McPhedran over a 30-year period. These records reflect the scope of McPhedran's political, professional and research interests and activities. Subjects covered in this series include constitutional reform, women's health (national and international), feminism, family violence, sexual abuse, and workplace discrimination/harassment. Also documented in this series is McPhedran's participation in conferences, political campaigns and committee work. Records pertaining to some of McPhedran's contractual employment, speeches delivered and articles written are also part of this series. Files in this series include notes, conference materials, brochures and pamphlets, journal articles, correspondence, newspaper clippings, memoranda, reports, electronic documents, and photographs.

Student yearbooks

Series consists of yearbooks created by graduating students of the TGH School of Nursing for 1923, 1925, 1931, 1954, 1955, 1959, 1967, 1968, 1970. Yearbooks contain text and photographs depicting graduating and continuing students, School faculty and staff, and student academic and social activities.

File 1.1.12.10 includes the yearbook belonging to Eugenia Wright with student autographs, as well as the announcement after-the-fact of the Commencement Exercises of the Forty-ninth Graduating Class of the School for Nurses for June 1931, and a poem entitled: <i>1931—T.G.H.—1981 / I’m Fine ……How About You?</i>

Student records

Series consists of the permanent student academic records files created and maintained by the Grace Hospital Training School for Nurses. Records contained in individual files vary according to the date of creation, but may include student history cards containing grades, instructors’ assessments, dates of admission to the School and completion of course; certificates of preliminary education (high school academic records); reports from affiliated Hospitals, schools of nursing, and/ or education programs which students attended to receive specialized training and experience; and medical records. Some files also contain materials subsequently added, including letters from students or their agents requesting letters of reference for employment or information contained in their files, applications for employment in the Nursing Department of the Grace Hospital and the Toronto Western Hospital and employment records.

Series includes all records for students in graduating classes up to and including 1920, and a 10% sample of records for students in post-1920 graduating classes. File 1.3.1.44 contains miscellaneous records for students in graduating classes 1912-1923. File 1.3.1.45 contains a list of graduates of the School 1892-1928.

Student records

Series consists of the permanent student academic record files created and maintained by the TGH School of Nursing. Records contained in individual files vary according to the date of creation. Most files will include the student history card, which contains grades by term as well as by subject; hours of practical work by department; dates and duration of absenteeism along with a list of cause or diagnosis and whether the time was made up; date of birth; home address; religion; place of birth; nationality of parents; instructors’ assessments; and dates of admission to the School and completion of courses. Information about vacations or illnesses was collected for the purpose of calculating the number of days absent and ensuring that the time was made up. Some student history cards include an attached picture. Files may also contain certificates of preliminary education (high school academic records); reports including records for hours of nursing care from affiliated Hospitals (e.g. The Hospital for Sick Children or the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital), schools of nursing, and/ or education programs which students attended to receive specialized training and experience; copies of medical records; and photographs. Some files also contain materials subsequently added, including letters from students or their agents requesting letters of reference for employment or information contained in their files, the actual letters of reference, applications for employment in the Nursing Department of the TGH and employment records, newspaper clippings and general correspondence.

Sub-series 1.1.2.1 to 1.1.2.10 contain the records of all students in each graduating class 1911-1920. Sub-series 1.1.2.11 to 1.1.2.37 each contain a 10% sample of the records of students in post-1920 graduating classes.

Records contained in individual files vary according to the date of creation, but may include student history cards containing grades, instructors’ assessments, dates of admission to the School and completion of course; certificates of preliminary education (high school academic records); reports from affiliated Hospitals, schools of nursing, and/ or education programs which students attended to receive specialized training and experience; and medical records. Some files also contain materials subsequently added, including letters from students or their agents requesting letters of reference for employment or information contained in their files, applications for employment in the Nursing Department of the TWH and employment records. For graduating years after 1920, only a 10% sample has been retained.

Student Nurses’ Association

Series consists of pamphlets containing the constitution, by-laws and rules of the Student Nurses’ Association of the TGH School of Nursing, as revised in August 1957, July 1959, April 1964, and November 1967. The Association was established October 30, 1917.

School photographs series

Series documents almost thirty years of John Edwin Loucks' career as a teacher and principles depicting him with his colleagues and students. Loucks taught at various North Vancouver elementary and high schools including North Star, Capilano and Eastview Schools. Series is arranged chronologically.

School Diaries

Series contains five scrapbooks concerning the history and activities of staff and students from Col. David Younger Public School in Sudbury, Ontario.
