Correspondence and other material

Series forms part of Helen Creighton fonds and consists of correspondence received by Creighton primarily from the 1930s to the late 1980s, including letters from colleagues and collaborators, folk singers and musicians, informants, employers, publishers, some letters from friends, family and admirers, and a small portion of copies of outgoing correspondence. Series also contains scrapbooks assembled by Creighton and others, which include newspaper clippings, articles, programs and other ephemera concerning her career, ca. 1918-1986; her field journals and notebooks which contain daily descriptions of collecting trips, [193-?]-1960; transcripts of folk music and folk tale recordings; sheet music, 1885-1924; lyrics; personal diaries, ca. 1937-1962; draft manuscripts of books including <i>Songs and Ballads of Nova Scotia, Traditional Songs from Nova Scotia, Bluenose Ghosts</i>, and her autobiography <i>A Life in Folklore</i> ; published and unpublished articles, short stories, songs, and poems by Creighton and other writers; research notes; newspaper clippings; contracts and royalty statements; lectures; broadcast scripts; reports; file cards; biographies of informants; index to songs and singers; certificates; and ephemera such as programs, brochures, and posters. Under the general subject of Maritime folklore and history, aspects of Creighton's work include folk songs, supernatural beliefs and superstitions, dances, games, cures, proverbs, and children's folklore. Series also contains records relating to Creighton's personal activities and her involvement with the Canadian Authors' Association, CBC, and other organizations.

Canadian Federation of University Women - Guelph financial records

This series consists of financial records of the Canadian Federation of University Women - Guelph. The various records document budgeting matters, including revenue and expenditures, accounts, and donations.

Guelph Curling Club historical records

Series consists of historical files collected and maintained by the Guelph Curling Club. Included are newspaper clippings and photographs of club events and activities and a draft copy of the publication Guelph Curling Club 150 Years 1838-1988. The slides are entitled Curling on the Speed River at Allan's Dam, Guelph and are reproductions of paintings by Evan MacDonald. These records document the history of the club.

Series consists of club directories. These records document the rules governing the club and details the codes of conduct for its membership. The directories also include calendars of events and lists of members including committee and exective members. Series also contains a copy of the club's 150th anniversary directory. These records document the club's communications with its membership.

Reference Letters

Series consists of two handwritten reference letters; one for Anna Koivula (Kantokoski/Koski) and one for her daughter Ann Chisholm (Ann Eva Kantokoski/Koski). The reference letter for Anna Koivula (born 1903) was written by Lydia Lofman, a pharmacist's wife, in Lapua Finland, dated May 1, 1921, regarding work in a kitchen, while the reference letter for Ann Chisholm (nee Koski, born 1924) was written by Mrs. J. Ferrier from Sudbury, Ontario, dated June 14, 1942 concerning her job doing housework.

Building Permit Registers

Series consists of two handwritten, bound volumes, of a list of building permits granted by the Town of Sudbury. These records acted as both registers and account books to determine the fees charged for water for construction purposes and, by 1919, an additional fee for the building permit itself. Entries are recorded by date and include the permit number, the name of the company or person doing the work, the address, the cost of construction listed as amount or value (only listed after 1920), a description of what was being built or renovated, who the work was for, what materials were used, and the fees for water and building permits. A Town of Sudbury Waterworks Department Application for Water for Construction Purposes and various Town of Sudbury Treasurer's Office Receipts are included as attachments in the books along with 2 cent Canada Postage stamps. The stamps, when used, were placed by the totals and included annotations of a date and initials written on them. This was most likely done as a check for auditing purposes.

Friends of the Guelph Public Library newsletter and related materials

Series consists of newsletters produced by the Friends of the Guelph Public Library documenting the group's role in providing information and awareness of library needs and services to the public. Included are correspondence files relating to the newsletter and procedures for newsletter distribution.

Friends of the Guelph Public Library annual general meetings

Series consists of minutes of annual general meetings documenting special events, programming and fundraising activities of the Friend's of the Guelph Public Library. Included are treasurers and auditors' reports, a brief history of John Snell, former Chief Library of Guelph Public Library, and proposed constitutional amendments. The photographs document club members and activities.
