  • 1956-1993

The collection consists of tape recordings of songs, stories and oral history interviews primarily with Kluane First Nation elders. They were recorded between 1956 and 1993. Most of the tape cassettes were collected in the community and from the Council of Yukon Indians in Whitehorse in 1993. Some are also recordings of Champagne-Aishihik First Nation and White River First Nation members. People interviewed include: Jack Allen, Grace Chambers, Jimmy Enoch, Louis Jacquot, Jessie Joe, Rita Joe, George John, Grace Johnson, Copper Lily Johnson, Dorothy Johnson, Jessie Johnson, Lena Johnson, Nellie Johnson, Sam Johnson, Jessie Kabanak, Joe Tom Tom, Sophie Watt, and Sam Williams. Interviewers include: Lena Johnson, Grace Chambers, Billy Joe, Dorothy Johnson, Gloria Johnson, Joe Johnson, Joyce Johnson, Clara Schinkel and Jody Cox. Two bound documents (translations and transcripts of stories and oral history interviews) correspond to 41 of these cassette recordings. The collection also includes sound recordings made for an oral history project funded by Parks Canada in 1993. There is a recording of Jessie Joe talking about Southern Tutchone plant names, and another of Billy Joe telling the story of "Old Grandma" at Kluane Lake. These recordings have not been transcribed. Videocassettes show band council meetings and events of the Kluane First Nation in Burwash Landing between 1989 and 1991. There is also an interview with Elijah Smith on videocassette in 1991. The collection is divided into four series: interviews; stories; songs; events and meetings.
