Collectively, the materials comprising this fonds illustrate virtually every aspect of Dr. Bigelow's personal and professional life as a surgeon and hospital division head, academic instructor and researcher, clinical investigator, author, lecturer, medical conference presenter and panellist, and member of numerous medical societies and medical/scientific committees.

In particular the fonds provides information about Dr. Bigelow's contributions to the advancement of cardiac surgery and the treatment of heart disease, especially his central accomplishments in contributing to the innovation and development of the surgical use of hypothermia in open-heart surgery and the electrical artificial cardiac pacemaker.

Correspondence and position papers

Series consists of correspondence and position papers regarding Princess Margaret Hospital’s relocation and the merger between Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. The material related to the Princess Margaret Hospital relocation was compiled while Dr. Cowan was Chair of the Oncology Coordinating Council at the University of Toronto. The material related to the TGH-TWH merger is from Dr. Cowan’s time as Head of the Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. Opinions on the proposed merger had been requested of the Chairs of Clinical Departments in the Faculty of Medicine by the Dean of Medicine, University of Toronto in 1985. Each head of a hospital’s Department of Medicine were sent copies.

Dr. Cowan organized these files with both names and numbers. File titles retain Dr. Cowan’s original titles and his file numbers are included at the end of the file titles in brackets. Arrangement is according to Dr. Cowan’s original numbering. There were two different files numbered 23. Files 1-21 and 37 were not donated to the Archives.

Correspondence & Administration

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence accumulated by William Louth who served as TTH Executive Vice-President from 1986 to1992. Most files relate to the TGH/TWH Merger.

Reports to Board of Trustees

Sub-series consists of monthly and annual reports submitted to the Board of Trustees by the chief executive officer of the TGH. Reports include financial statements, statistics illustrating major hospital and departmental functions and activities, summary accounts of major events occurring within the Hospital.

Annual General Meeting minutes

The first Annual General Meeting for the University Health Network occurred on September 15th, 1999. Series includes the contents of a binder labeled “Annual General Meeting Minutes Jun 1947-2005”. This binder included minutes of the University Health Network’s Annual General Meetings (1999-2005) as well as the minutes of the Annual Meetings of the Subscribers of its predecessor corporations The Toronto Hospital (1987-1998) and the Toronto General Hospital (1947-1986). The original purpose of these meetings was to elect Trustees. The annual meeting was extended to several meetings in 1947 and 1949 due to a lack of nominations. Minutes from September 17, 1997 are missing. Most minutes are signed originals.

Superintendent’s Correspondence and General Administration Files 1936 [C.J. Decker]

Sub-series consists of correspondence and general administration files maintained by the Superintendent in conducting the day-to-day administration of the TGH.

All files originally included in this sub-series are missing, except the annual audit reports prepared by the Hospital’s accountants Clarkson, Gordon Chartered Accountants (file 2.10.2)

File 2.10.1 contains an index of the original contents of the sub-series, based on numbers assigned to each file.

Superintendent’s Correspondence and General Administration files 1938 [C.J. Decker]

Sub-series consists of correspondence and general administration files maintained by the Superintendent in conducting the day-to-day administration of the TGH. The original numbers given to each file are included in the file list.

The original file titles for files 2.11.19, 2.11.20, and 2.11.48 included the full names of patients. In order to assure compliance with Ontario’s Personal Health Information, 2004 (PHIPA), the full names have been replaced with initials.
