Iris Birtwistle fonds

Fonds consists of one small photo album with handwritten notes and fifteen small black and white photos taken during the Second World War. Includes two small newspaper clippings. These photos were collected by Iris Birtwistle and other female volunteers at the Catholic Soldiers Club in Aldershot, United Kingdom. Also includes five mounted photographs, some duplicates, of members of 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade Anti-Tank Coy., Canadian Active Service Force (C.A.S.F.) and Headquarters 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade.

The collection consists of a three vol. set of Shakespeare's Works (J. Payne Collier, Lupton Pub. New York, n.d.) which Malcolm Lowry has used as notebooks, as well as for annotations on the texts themselves. These volumes, given by Lowry to his friend George Stevenson, were used as a resource by Lowry, especially during the composition of Under the Volcano. The volumes include poems and jottings by Lowry on fly leaves and paste-downs and on p. 944. In addition, textual annotations by Lowry occur most heavily in The Tempest, Merchant of Venice, Timon of Athens and, to a lesser extent, The Sonnets.

Haystack photograph collection

The collection contains 204 copies of original photographs gathered by the Haystack Reunion Committee for inclusion in its commemorative booklet, Haystack Reflections, published in 1997. The images include schools, churches, business premises, work and social activities, special events, Haystack residents, and the changing landscape of the community in the first half of the 20th century. All have been identified and described on MHA photographic database. Families include Gregory, Drake, March, Coffin, Wakely, Gilbert, Wareham, Allen, Halfyard, Paul, Bendle, Best, Johnson, Jarvis, Tulk, Bert, Peach, Quinton, Pike, Reid, Bugden.

This fonds consists of records created, accumulated and used by David Johnson in his work as an artist from the 1950s to 2008. The records include project working files of David Johnson Studio, Inc. relating to stained glass commissions for homes, public buildings and churches. The fonds also includes Johnson's original design paintings done in the medium of gouache; court trial sketches, primarily of the Colin Thatcher murder trial, done in pen, pencil and watercolour; and photographs of selected artistic works of Johnson's including sculptures, drawings, paintings and prints.

The fonds has been arranged into four series: Project Files; Designs for Stained Glass Windows and Artwork; Other Artistic Works and Personal.

The types of records included are paintings, drawings, photographs, correspondence and clippings.

J.H. (Harris) MacLean collection

Collection consists of an account of Commander J.H. (Harris) MacLean’s naval career including his voyage through the Northwest Passage, and a copy of the eulogy delivered at Commander MacLean’s funeral. Both were written by Ian Greenwood from interviews he conducted with Commander MacLean beginning in November 2006. The collection also includes various black and white photographs of HMCS Labrador and her crew as they erected beacons during their voyage through the Northwest Passage. A black and white photograph of the crew of HMCS Margaree and four colour photos, three of HMCS Margaree, and one of ships moored at Pearl Harbour are also part of the collection. Also includes various group photos from a meeting of the Explorers Club of New York in 1956, a photo of 2nd Escort Squadron Hockey team taken in Tokyo Japan in February 1962, several photos of groups of men from HMCS Discovery and HMCS Kings. Includes black and white photographs of graduating classes from Fleet School, HMCS Naden, Esquimalt. Miscellaneous black and white photos of various ships, people, icebergs, sailors, and planes are also part of the collection.
