Clarence Small fonds

  • ON00009 F 4557
  • Fonds
  • 1881-1915

Fonds consists of a diary describing the daily life of Clarence Small in Toronto, Ontario for the first two months of 1886. It also includes a newspaper clipping and a card of merit earned by Clarence while attending public school in Toledo in 1881, which were inserted in the front of the diary.

The diary is a commercially printed volume with journal entries written in pencil in a small, clear script. These entries, complete for every day in January and February 1886, include information on the weather and on Clarence's activities and meals, but deal primarily with reflections on his worsening health, especially problems with his stomach and throat. Entries also noted doctor's visits and several home treatments, including lime water, cod-liver oil, a brandy bath for his legs, and an onion poultice.

Various domestic matters were recorded at the back of the diary, written in pencil with the same handwriting. These reflect the writer's current cash as of 1 January 1886, items and services purchased in the first two months of the year, and a few important purchases made late in 1885. Work pay and money spent on organ parts in January and February 1886 were also recorded. Furthermore, recipes for Wolf's Cholera Mixture and Yellow Oil have been transcribed.

Subsequent notes written in a larger, unsteady hand include a brief genealogical record of the family of Clarence's sister Mary Augusta Small, listing the births and some deaths of her eleven children, the death of her husband John H. Lapp, and finally the birth of her grandchild Margaret Augusta Lapp in 1915. The same later hand recorded a brief journal entry for the death of Clarence and also that of his mother. Other notes in this hand reflect financial matters involving a man named Bert, probably indicating Mary Small's son Albert Manning Lapp.

The card of merit from Toledo Public Schools was presented to Clarence at the close of the Fall Term in 1881 and was signed by his teacher, C. Lillelund. The undated clipping, from an unknown newspaper, comprises an inspirational poem entitled "Only a Little Way," reprinted from the Richmond Whig.
