Alden Barss fonds

The fonds consists of textual records (including correspondence, reports, minutes and course materials), published materials, and photographs documenting the life and career of Alden Barss. The records relate to the teaching of horticulture; the development of the Department of Horticulture, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the University; Barss' involvement with the Anglican Theological College and the Anglican Church; his professional career; and his personal life. Some records were apparently collected and arranged by Barss in the course of writing a history of the Department of Horticulture.

Fonds also includes two government reports entitled: "The Administration of Japanese Affairs in Canada, 1942-1944, Removal of Japanese from Protected Areas", and "The Hastings Park Clearing Station".

The fonds also contains correspondence, reports, memoranda, minutes and other administrative records from Rice's involvement with the Nurse Midwifery Service at Grace Hospital. The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Education (1980-1, 1993); Published Writing, Proposals, Lectures and Research Materials (1977-2002); Nurse Midwifery Service (1983-1991); Professional Associations (1976-1992); Professional Regulation of Midwifery (1978-1999, predominant 1987-1997); UBC Midwifery Degree Program (2000-2001) and Audio (1997).

Andrew Hutchinson fonds

Fonds consists of course materials, correspondence, subject files, reports, clippings, printed material, and index cards, relating to Hutchinson's work with the UBC Department of Biology and Botany. The fonds reflects his research interests which included studies of conifers, forest ecology and tree genetics, particularly of the Douglas fir; to a limited extent his personal life is also documented. The fonds also includes approximately 3,600 photographic negatives and prints (most black and white, some in colour), 1,200 lantern slides, and some transparencies. The photographs are mainly microscopic images of plants and trees in British Columbia, Mexico, Cuba, Florida and South Africa in the early part of the twentieth century. There is also a photograph album accompanying Hutchinson's report Grazing Lands in British Columbia. Finally, there are a number of maps, charts, and diagrams, which are listed and stored separately.

The archival fonds consists of the following series: Direct Action-related clippings, correspondence, ephemera and notes; legal correspondence; pre- and post-parole correspondence, ephemera, notes and writings by others; correspondence received during incarceration; prison records (supplied to Hansen under an Access to Information request); Direct Action chapter drafts and related materials; and RCMP surveillance transcripts (closed until 2072).

Subject matter of the mixed clippings and correspondence series includes: anti-nuclear/anti-cruise missile activism, court proceedings, Elizabeth Fry Society, environmental issues, indigenous peoples issues, international activism, pornography, anti-pornography/anti-snuff films, prison-industrial complex, sexual assault, Red Hot Video, the Vancouver Five trial matters and sentencing, women’s rights.

Correspondence received during incarceration series includes: correspondence from Brent Taylor, Janice Bear Neudorf, and various supporters and publishers; series also includes 1 box of previous sealed letters from other members of the Vancouver Five, primarily Brent Taylor.
